Yoni Steaming
What is Yoni Steaming?
Yoni Steaming is an ancient practice that is used across several cultures. It includes squatting or sitting over steaming herbs to expose the pelvic area to the herbs' medicinal qualities. Yoni or V-Steaming can be used to relieve premenstrual discomfort, regulate menstrual cycles, aid in postpartum recovery and involution (the shrinking of the uterus following childbirth), ease menopausal discomforts, and much more.
Do not Yoni Steam if you are bleeding, pregnant, or have an IUD.

How to Create Your Herbal Infusion
Infusions are made the same way you'd make a typical tea. Simply pour boiling water over your selection of herbs, place a lid and let steep for at least 10 minutes. If you are creating an infusion for an herbal bath or peri-bottle, let steep for several hours or as long as overnight.
Preparing Your Yoni Steam
While your herbs are simmering, set up your space for the steam. You may or may not have a steaming chair; either way works fine. If you have small or noisy children, I suggest noise cancelling headphones. This helps to minimize distractions so you can truly relax for this soothing ritual.
Come to center and set an intention for your steam. You might want to use this time to silently meditate, listen to some music, or throw on your favorite comfort show. There are no rules! Grab some warm tea or a drink to sip on. Put on a face mask or include a magnesium foot soak. What sounds like it would be amazing right now? Do that.
** Bonus Step **
Doing this extra step will help activate and connect to your Yoni. Sit up nice and tall, maybe in a chair or with legs crossed. Take a couple slow, deep breaths. Bring the breath down into your belly. Inhale through the nose, exhale through the mouth. Picture your pelvic bowl and how the bones and muscles hold you upright. Relax. Breathe deeply into the pelvis. Once you feel grounded and connected, do 5 vaginal kegels. Relax and take some more deep breaths. Then, when you're ready, do 5 kegels using your anus muscles. Relax. I suggest doing this exercise before steaming to connect with your pelvic floor and awaken the energetic channel. Many of us carry tension in this area, so bringing awareness to the region will help to fully relax during the steam.
Undress and wrap a large fabric (a sheet works perfectly) around yourself above the breasts to create a flowy dress. You can also add another sheet or fabric over your head for the steam to create a mini steam room! Alternatively, you can wrap the fabric around your waist and throw a cozy robe on up top. Again, do what works best for you.
Prepare the steaming herbs. This can be in a stainless steel pot or a large glass bowl. Drape your fabric around the pot or bowl to ensure none of the steam will escape. If the steam is still too hot, release a bit before placing yourself over it. Usually a couple seconds will do.
If you do not have a steaming chair, you can hover over a large glass bowl on hands and knees with the fabric draped around you.
Sit for 15, 30, or however many minutes you'd like. Your body will let you know when.
Consider journaling or having another outlet after the steam, especially if you did the bonus pelvic floor exercises. It is normal to have an emotional release following a steaming session. Even more so if this is your first experience with bringing such awareness to the pelvic floor.
